Dorothea Lange
Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) whose career as a renowned documentary photographer had first settled in San Francisco in 1918. There she worked for more than a decade as a studio portrait and commercial photographer. Between 1919 and 1932 Lange made a series of family portraits for her close friend Gertrude Clausen. Beginning as simple baby pictures, over time, Lange captured sublime images of Gertrude and her daughters as well as delightful interactions among the children. This family collection of 70 prints is something of a rarity in that a single photographer, who would become one of the masters of the 20th century, recorded the advent of each new child to the Clausen family.
